HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT NUTRITIONIST FOR YOU
01. YOU
What are your main goals? Do you want to lose weight? Do you need help with creating balance? Do you need more sleep? Are you looking to start exercising? Wanting your skin to glow? Learn healthy recipes that work best for your body? Do you have aches and pains that need to go? Live a healthy life to watch your grandkids grow up? What does living your best life look like to you?
Now once you have answered these questions find a nutritionist or health coach who is in line with what you are looking for.
A great starting place is asking some of your friends, family, or other health care providers for a referral. Getting a strong recommendation from someone you trust, who has an idea of what you are looking for can be super helpful!
02. THE NUTRITIONIST OR HEALTH COACH
What are their specialties, theories, and approaches?
You want to make sure they are in line with what you are looking for.
They should not be making a number false promises, sounds too good to be true quick fixes, and make you feel pressured to sign up right then and there.
There is no quick fix, but know that small health changes will lead to big changes. Consistency is key, as well as learning how to listen to your body.
A great nutritionist or health coach is going to be happy to have a conversation with you and answer any questions or concerns you may have. This will give you the opportunity to see if the two of you are a good fit or seek out any potential red flags! These could be anything from super restrictive calorie diets to completely eliminating certain food groups, or pushing a product claiming weight loss if you take it.
There is no recipe for one size fits all, everyone is different and everybody has different needs.
03. BACKGROUND + SERVICES
What are their credentials? Do they offer additional certified services that will help you achieve your goals?
There are so many different degrees and types of certifications out there. Ask what their background is in? What types of clients do they work with? An amazing provider will always refer out when they feel a client will benefit from other services.
Maybe your nutritionist or health coach has a background in other health care fields such as an acupuncturist, nurse practitioner, M.D., physical therapist, psychologist, yoga instructor or more. A provider who combines a number of different services can be extremely beneficial to you taking a more holistic approach!
What other types of support do they offer outside of your sessions? Can you reach your nutritionist or health coach via email, text, phone conversation? Do they have groups meetings, online programs, or support material for you and your wellness journey?
04. YOUR VOICE
Are you being heard? I think this is one of the most important considerations!
You want to feel like you are being listened to, your concerns and goals are being taking into consideration and not just brushed off, or you have been given this one size fits all plan.
You don’t want to be told it’s all about calories in verses calories out because it is NOT at all about that. There are so many other things to consider such as stress levels, relationships, work, physical activity and more.
The right nutritionist or health coach for you is going to be one who truly cares about your well-being, one who listens to your entire story, makes you feel comfortable, one you can trust, and help you make the small changes to reach your health goals of living your best life!
